USED TO BE ONE OF THE ROTTEN ONES

Intended to tell the story behind self discovery and acceptance through the use of chaotic and experimental design, the book serves as a journey through a life of self-reflection.

The use of typography aims to lead the audience through surreal feelings of denial, anger, questioning, depression, and acceptance. The pages take the viewer on a journey through a greater transformation that redefines the meaning of self expression and authenticity.
I Saw The Tv Glow is a phycological horror drama, produced by A24. The film is centered around coming of age, queer identity, and repression of self. The two main characters bond over a shared interest in the young adult tv show, The Pink Opaque.

As they age, they are forced to grapple with reality vs. fiction, self-expression, and reconciliation with their gender identity. The film explores these themes through the lense of 90s stylism and early childhood nostalgia.

DENIAL & ANGERDenial is expressed through the use of negative space, color blocking, and asymmetric display type. Nostalgia is a key emotion expressed though the denial of self.

QUESTIONINGUse of repetitive phrases and type with CRT textures emphasize the uncertainty and questioning phase of self acceptance.

DEPRESSION
The color shift and lack of pink elements highlights the dark nature of the depressive phase. The discordant and jumbled type represents the feelings of loss and hopelessness that precede acceptance. The overwhelming presence of obsession is represented through motion, emphasized through the spiral motif and direction.

ACCEPTANCE

The final chapter depicts acceptance, representing the hope amongst the uncertainty. Glowing type mimics the hopeful symbolism within the film, reenforcing the ideals of self-reflection and understanding. Connection becomes a primary feature of this emotion. The motion emphasizes the importance of community and relationship through the iconography and continuous lines.

Used To Be One Of the Rotten Ones is printed on 12inx9in Neenah Classic Crest Stipple paper, and hand bound.

The size of the paper is in a 4:3 aspect ratio, in order to tie back to visual elements within the film. While the movie has shots in both 16:9 and 4:3, the later of the two ratios is used within the film to express discovery, truth, and a more accurate reality. Because the ultimate goal of Used To Be One Of The Rotten ones was to depict the process of self-acceptance, the use of this aspect ratio further communicates this message to the reader.

In addition, the stipple paper serves as a tangible texture to the reader, and adds depth to the printed designs. It is meant to represent and reinforce the television as static motifs seen within the story.
